Feel like you are to old to learn?
If you answered “Yes” to these questions then let me tell you…Just do it.
As a Violin teacher I have taught all ages and yes starting an instrument at a young age is great. It does wonders to those amazing brains we have. Even when we are Adults. Most people think that learning an instrument as an Adult is not possible. By the time your an Adult people think its to late. I say never. I highly recommend learning an instrument and here is why.
Brain Fireworks
Study’s have shown that when playing an Instrument the whole brain is working. With leaning and instrument you are learning to read music, use motor skills to play your instrument and use your ears to listen. By using Visual, Auditory and Physical skills your brain is getting a huge workout. Study’s done in Elderly homes have show that learning an instrument can help reverse Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s I think that is WONDERFUL, don’t you?

Music makes you happy
Learning an instrument can make you feel happy. Just listening to music can do wonders for your mood So imagine what playing an instrument can do? When you are totally focused on practicing and learning an instrument its hard to think about anything else at that time. Focusing on one thing and pushing everything else out of you head can give you peace of mind. Especially in our crazy busy lifestyles now days. We are so busy multitasking and thinking at a million miles an hour that it playing forces us to stop and calm down.
Music is something everyone should enjoy no matter what age. If you are just leaning something for the first time as an adult…Im proud of you. I have one student that has only been learning for 6 years and started in her 60’s. She has played with community orchestras and recently was able to join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as a guest. The smile on her face after performing was priceless. She worked hard and it was brilliant to see her so happy. It is an experience she and i will never forget. So proud.
Learning an instrument gives you another skill to master. Most adults have already got a skill they have mastered and probably have a career in this mastered skill. So learning a instrument as an Adult and adding to your already skilled brain can give you happiness. It gives you another goal to work towards and enjoy at the same time. Your hard work is rewarded with great sounds.
Learning as an Adult can give you a Sense of Community
As proud as I am of my student. When learning an instrument, it does not matter what level you get to. Yes there are some people that aim to get to a higher level of playing. But if you can get to a level where you can join a community band or orchestra or even play in a small group in church or a function. The health benefits of learning a instrument as an Adult are great. Being part of an group that is welcoming and being able to play in a group once a week is a great feeling and some groups even feel like an extra family. Belonging to a group and playing an instrument is fun and gives you something to work towards. Playing in a group give you a boost of confidence as well and a ton of learning. Great Stuff!!!
A great example to kids
Have you got kids? or younger people around you? Playing your instrument around them will encourage them to do the same. Everyone is wonderfully different and have different ways of learning and will learn a different speeds as well. Encouraging young people to play music by playing yourself is a gift you can give for free. Some children have had difficulty reading or doing maths or learning in general until they start to learn an instrument. So go get lessons and practice. Children with see and do. Weather it be piano, violin or guitar. Do what ever you are interested in and love to listen to.
Give it a go.
Blessings to you all.
